an unlikely hollywood export

the hollywood sign is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world.
unsurprisingly, this kind of exposure was always going to lead to imitations of the 50ft high structure all over the world…

10 stunning ultra-geeky home cinemas

huge screens, incredible sound systems and luxurious seats are popping up in seemingly spare rooms and basements larger than my entire flat. however this is also giving a few movie geeks a real chance to shine and it seems they’re not content with a simple in-home movie theatre decent enough to hold a premiere in. so, in no particular order, here are 10 of the best, geekiest, themed home cinemas on earth…

top 5 ‘deserted city’ scenes in film

there’s a relatively easy way to give the audience a chill during a film: slip in a shot of a deserted city centre, a city centre that’s notoriously busy in real-life, the scene preferably culminating in the camera panning out to prove the crew didn’t just manage to clear 10ft of road for 5 seconds.
it’s […]

top 10 films containing convincing inebriation

(…or ‘top 10 films with at least one scene which contains an actor convincingly portraying a pissed person’.)
it’s easy to stumble around, roll your eyes and slur your words in front of a camera but it’s not that often you watch a movie and wonder whether an actor was actually hammered during shooting due to […]

13 of the worst fake accents in film

[update] i’ve really hit some nerves with this list. 1. in my opinion, de caprio in blood diamond was an example of a good accent on the whole. not perfectly consistent but there’s no way he’s amongst the worst. 2. al pacino in scarface - fair point, it was horrendous and should’ve been included. […]

top 5 extreme method actors alive today

(these are actors i believe to be the top 5 extreme method actors alive today due to techniques / preparation methods i’m aware of. please note, before you start sending me hate mail, these are deliberately male-only. i’ll probably do another post just consisting of actresses at a later date).
first off, i’ll give you my take on […]

product placement in politics

i watched the new transformers movie the other day. quick review: the cgi blew me away, everything else just fucking blew.
the worst thing though was the product placement for ebay, culminating in one of the funniest product placement moments in history (i don’t want to spoil it for you but let’s just say that a […]

the secret life of plants (1979)

watch this.
this documentary is extremely hard to get hold of and has just (9th july) been uploaded to google video. it’s a 1979 documentary about plants and was one of the very few at the time to use time-lapse photography. on top of that, there’s a soundtrack by stevie wonder.

imdb entry is here.

this film is not yet rated (2006)

get it while you can chaps, this’ll be gone soon.
it’s the full movie and if you don’t already know it’s about the motion picture association of america (mpaa) film rating system - imdb link.
it’s funny and worrying in equal doses and the best thing you can do right now is watch it through your balls (eye)….

(there’s […]

top 6 worst movie physics moments

(edit) i’ve removed no.7 due to the fact that i’m incredibly stupid and should never consider making a film that involves any kind of physics. thanks for the heads-up. point taken.
nothing riles me more than having an enthralling movie ruined by a spot of bullshit-physics. you know the scene - a moment just so unbelievable […]
