old aged computers, submissions are open & chicago at night

my computer gasped its last breath 4 days ago.

i realised it was coming when the need to re-install windows became a fortnightly affair and the husky sound of the pc itself became louder than the washing machine downstairs. it ended messily: the little bastard wouldn’t even entertain another fresh start, stubbornly throwing lines of delibrately confusing code in my face instead of the oh-so familiar re-install options page, whilst making noises similar to the sound of a ferry’s horn as it approaches port. anyway, punches were thrown (by me) and i ended up terminating its life altogether using human force and screaming.

the good news: 1) i was forced to get a new pc and it’s brilliant. the shiny beast starts up without so much as a murmur. 2) i’ve got a legal copy of an operating system for the first time (it’s vista but you can’t have everything). 3) i can now open more than 2 programs at once.

the bad news: 1) i’ve not been able to post anything for the past 4 days. 2) i quite enjoyed not being able to post anything for the past 4 days. 3) i now have less money than i had prior to purchasing a new pc.

the break has done me good and forced me to realise that i need to post less frequently. despite all the shitty adverts that you may have noticed springing up around here i don’t profit from this site (possibly my own fault) and therefore can’t afford to spend every available hour maintaining / updating it. that’s not to say i’m stopping though - i’m just slowing down with the posts.

i’ve also decided to let others post on deputydog as i’ve had enquiries about it in the past and think now is the perfect time to try it out. if you’re interested get in touch using the address on the ‘contribute‘ page - please let me know what you want to write about before you spend hours completing it only for me to tell you it’s not suitable. apologies in advance but i’m not letting any shit slip through without a fight. if the subject matter’s been all over the internet already, isn’t extremely interesting and is in no way related to the posts already on this site then i’m afraid it doesn’t belong here. i like to think the content on this site is pretty unique and plan to keep it that way. i can’t pay you for any content but i’ll happily link to your site / post your personal phone number for all to see in return.

i think it could do the site some good.

[update] since posting this a few hours ago i’ve recieved a shitload of emails from people offering to submit stuff. thanks for the rapid response. looks like this could be a good idea. oh and no, uppercase letters won’t be making an appearance, even on guest posts.

finally, here’s a brilliant photo of chicago’s grid system at night for your eyeballs to digest. i found it a few weeks back on flickr whilst looking at city layouts and never got round to posting it…

  1. I think the real question is: Will contributors have to post in all lowercase? :P

  2. umbrae: that’s actually something i considered a few hours ago. the conclusion? absolutely. it’s lowercase or no-case.

  5. Congratulations on your new computer! My sympathies about Vista… although I have no experience with it (or any PC systems), I’ve heard nothing worthwhile about it.

I cannot wait to see your fans submissions!

  6. The noise was probably dust, cleaning it up could have helped… As far as the OS goes, why don’t you use linux?

  7. jd rucker: looking forward to it. you’ve got a great surname.

miss c: vista’s not actually that bad, it’s just an extremely shiny (and heavy) version of XP. after booting up you’ve already got about 100 processes running.

cyril: you’re possibly correct but i couldn’t see the dust for all the dirt. as for linux, never tried it as an os. i probably should but i’m scared of change.

  8. It’s pretty good idea, exposure for new content and for you free content to monetize ;)

  9. @Ape: anyone who runs a site like this one knows that even if there are a lot of readers the site doesn’t make a lot of money … Shaun and I would, for example, probably each make more hourly working at McDonalds … you have to love it or it isn’t worth it :)

  11. You’ll really regret vista (trust me I’m an IT consultant in one of my many lives), just install Linux for Dummies (otherwise known as Ubuntu) it’ll work fine and you’ll never have to wait for virus checker downloads, your software won’t spy on you, etc, etc, etc.
And I don’t know why you don’t make money, our blog makes almost a dollar in a good week.

  12. there’s nothing wrong with vista once you trim the fat. Most complainers are just afraid of change and complained all the same when win95, win98, win2k, and winxp came out. I’m also in IT, and skip that free stuff, there’s a reason it’s free.

  13. I before C except after C; there are hundreds of exceptions, receipt etc, However an I alone in a sentence is ALLWAYS capitalized.
