’shadow’ - helsinki, 2005 (photo credit: gari.baldi)
unfortunately the surreal scene above was actually an art installation by kaarina kaikkonen on the streets of helsinki, simply rows and rows of clothing suspended above the roads. i hope it stayed. kaikkonen seems to have a thing for 2nd hand clothing: she also assembled 3000 men’s jackets and placed them neatly on the steps of helsinki cathedral in 2000 (see below). unfortunately some of the dye from the jackets seeped into the stone underneath leaving a permanent reminder for years to come.

Beautiful! I like art that brings something else to our consciousness in the midst of our daily routine… I would be grateful to Kaikkonen if I lived in Helsinki.
I love it. It makes you think about where the remains of our consumerist society end up.
Ghosts! Marching in the air! In formation! And on such a beautiful day.
Wow, where do these artists get their ideas from, I could do with some inspiration from time to time.
Fantastic pics.
Regards.
shame about the steps, eh?
“You can’t take it with you” anyone? We get so caught up with our things. To me it’s freeing to see these suspended from above, not really having an owner or a purpose. Would love to see this in person.
I’ve been doing this for years with shoes and power lines, haha
It’s photoshop
Here’s an interesting piece of clothing-based art which I saw last summer at SF MOMA . . .
