the growth of dubai

‘monster x’ (thanks - unlucky with the name) sent me these brilliant aerial shots illustrating the rapid growth of dubai over the last few decades. it’s not surprising at all but pretty cool nonetheless.

notice the man-made islands in the last shot.

dubai, 1973

dubai, 1990

dubai, 2006

i think a photo for each of the last 15 years would’ve been even more impressive, the speed at which the area’s been growing recently is fucking phenomenal.

  1. What happened to the Persian gulf? Where did it appear from and then where did it disappear to?

  2. I’ve been wondering, why did they build two trees out in the water? Wasn’t one enough? Now there are more than one, not that cool anymore… though it’s in the same city, but still. :o

  3. They build the islands so as to maximize the shoreline. Everyone can have his own beachfront!

  4. they build the islands because dubai’s oil is running out very soon and when these islands are all complete they will generate tourisum to the area which will then be there source of income … in the world project there constructing at the moment two irish brothers paid 38 million dollers to buy the artificial ireland . Richard Bransons supposedly or might have already brought the english one. i see a video of what they will look like when complete on discovery channel and they looked amazeing
