the world’s shortest international bridge

[update #3] - holy fuck. you’d think i’d blown up the house with a family inside and then posted photos of the carnage. it seems i’m possibly wrong, this is possibly just a nice little bridge and the border story is possibly a myth.

wikipedia’s still full of shit though.

[update #2] - so i may be wrong. depends on where you look.

[update] - i can’t believe there are still people out there who see wikipedia as a great source for hard fact. try looking at a few different websites now and then. there are many many sources that believe this bridge to be the shortest international bridge and i’d take their word over wikipedia’s any day.

the zavikon islands…

allegedly, the island on the left is in canada, the one on the right is in the united states. the smaller island contains the ‘backyard’ of the house on the larger island.

the result is the shortest international bridge in the world.

  1. Damn you ruined it! If GW or DHS finds out about this they will make the owners of that pretty little house put up a giant 10,000 volt electric fence and pay for a team of border guards.

“There is a pair of islands near Rockport called Zavikon. A popular tale among local guides is that the bigger part of Zavikon is in Canada, while the smaller part is in the USA, and the foot bridge between them is the “shortest international bridge in the world”. In fact Zavikon is in Canada.”

Sorry, but you’re wrong here. The “Shortest International Bridge” is a myth propogated by the local tourist guides and boat operators in the Thousand Islands area. Both islands are located in Canadian waters. The flags seen along the bridge are merely symbols of the friendship that exists between these two nations. The main island is named Zavicon, I forget the other’s. They are located about 100 meters north of the border line.

Your “many many sources” are random pic/blog/bookmarking sites, and actually less reliable than Wikipedia. Don’t trust me? See for yourself:

It’s not their fault bud. Our WONDERFUL (see sarcasm) goverment doesn’t have any law stating immigrants must speak English, we’re also obviously not doing a good enough job blocking the borders. Did you know we basically let them live here? An illegal immigrant just has to have a child here and BLAMO! legal citizen. Legal immigrants, including those who come here and pop out little lawn mowing babies, live tax free for seven years.

But who really gives a shit? I’ve been on a Boat tour that led me right past this place. The guy says it almost as if its a joke. Thats all this is. Clearly it would be incredibly hard to determine if such a tiny island was actually in the states or in canada. Screw your maps, they’re never 100% accurate, after all they’re MAN MADE!

This is supposed to be a cute and fun urban legend. Notice how the author says “Allegedly?”

With that in mind, it seems reasonable that the border shifted sometime in the past, or that a misinformed tour guide assumed the flags on the bridge meant that it crossed an international border. Can anyone in the Thousand Island area go to the courthouse get some surveys and settle this?

I think that would be wicked cool to have your own separate island backyard. Somewhat hazardous if you’re drinking in the backyard and want to stumble back to the house however. 47. And this is the quote from the ‘tourist’ web site. Sounds like they know what they are talking about rather then it being some urban myth.

The boundary agreement in 1793 between
the U.S. and Canadian Governments decided
that no Island would be split in two, the
boundary line would run a 100 yards from
any shore line, if this was not made possible,
the line would run right down the middle
of Islands, and there would be problems
on which Government would collect the taxes.
This explains why the boundary between the
U.S. and Canada follows a zigzag line.
Two thirds of the Islands are in Canadian
territory but the total acreage of the Canadian
and American Islands is closely equal.

  49. Daymo: “The boundary agreement in 1793 between the U.S. and Canadian Governments decided that no Island would be split in two, the boundary line would run a 100 yards from any shore line …”

There you have it then. Look on google maps. Whether you agree or not where the Canada-US border is, the scale is correct, and the distance between the islands is just under 100 feet. By the above, the boundary line can not run between them.

Sheesh … you quote it, but it’s as if you didn’t read it.

As for the different flags flying on the two islands, I can hoist a French flag on Staten Island - that doesn’t make it France. Again, it’s a gimmick for the tourists.

I have no idea whether the border runs between these two islands or not, but I should point out that the actual, for sure international bridge between the U.S. and Canada in the 1000 Islands, at the end of I-81, is not much longer, if any, than this bridge here. The two major spans of the 1000 Islands Bridge on the U.S. and Canadian sides are amazingly large and impressive, but they each connect to smaller islands on their far sides, each havint its nation’s respective customs and immigration facilities, and these two islands are separated from one another, across the int’l boundary, by basically a culvert. Weird but true.
