7 amazing holes

(if you’re expecting filth you’ll be disappointed).

looking at photos like these scares and fascinates me in equal doses. the sheer scale of these holes reminds you of just how tiny you are.

mirny diamond mine, serbia siberia

i’m pretty sure most people have seen this one. it’s an absolute beast and holds the title of largest open diamond mine in the world. at 525 metres deep with a top diameter of 1200 metres there’s even a no-fly zone above the hole due to a few helicopters being sucked in.

the red arrow in the photo below is pointing to a huge truck.

kimberley big hole - south africa

apparently the largest ever hand-dug excavation in the world, this 1097 metre deep mine yielded over 3 tonnes of diamonds before being closed in 1914.

the amount of earth removed by workers is estimated to total 22.5 million tonnes.

glory hole - monticello dam

a glory hole is used when a dam is at full capacity and water needs to be drained from the resevoir.

this is the glory hole belonging to monticello dam in california and it’s the largest in the world, its size enabling it to consume 14′400 cubic feet of water every second.

the hole can be seen at the top left of the photo above. if you were to jump in for some reason your slightly damp body would shoot out near the bottom of the dam (below).

bingham canyon mine, utah

this is supposedly the largest man-made excavation on earth. extraction began in 1863 and still continues today, the pit increasing in size constantly. in its current state the hole is 3/4 mile deep and 2.5 miles wide.

great blue hole, belize

situated 60 miles off the mainland of belize is this incredible ‘geographical phenomenon’ known as a blue hole. there are numerous blue holes around the world but none as stunning as this one.

at surface level the near perfectly circular hole is 1/4 mile wide, the depth in the middle reaching 145 metres. obviously the hole is a huge hit with divers. read more here.

diavik mine, canada

this incredible mine can be found 300km northeast of yellowknife in canada.

the mine is so huge and the area so remote that it even has its own airport with a runway large enough to accomodate a boeing 737. it also looks equally as cool when the surrounding water is frozen.

sinkhole, guatemala

a sinkhole is caused when water (usually rainwater or sewage) is soaked up by the earth on a large scale, resulting in the ground collapsing.

these photos are of a sinkhole which occured early this year in guatemala. the hole swallowed a dozen homes and killed at least 3 people.

officials blamed the monster of a hole on a ruptured sewage pipe.

a news report about the hole…

The hole in Guatemala consumed a single domestic dwelling.

  21. Helicopters hovering over the ground push the air column between them and the ground to stay in the air. If you all of a sudden cross a huge hole the helicopter will drop if it does not increase the speed of the rotors accordingly. (BTW increasing the speed of the rotors to go from 0 to 500+ meters (1700 feet) is not an easy or quick task)

  24. Sorry Mobius, but it is posible that an helicopter gets sucked into a hole, if it is big enough (read deep enough). That is because earth is hotter underground, and if you get deep enough, you get a “Termal Borehole”, when the diference in temperature causes a stream of hot air.
Now, when a helicopter enters such hot air stream, he no longer can sustain his altitude because he is adjusted to the colder air outside of stream, that is thicker then the hot air. The hellicopter is going to fall so long until the pilot adjusts the speed of the rotor to the hot air (if the hole is very deep, the air is to hot and the helicopter is going to fall before the helicopter achives enough power).
There is also a stream of colder air, that streams into such a hole, and again, if a hole is deep enough, that is a powerfull stream that easily slams a helicopter into ground or into the wall of the borehole.
I hope that I gave a good explanation for the hellicopter accidents, and I apologise for a bad english, I do not live in a english speaking area.

  42. “Helicopters hovering over the ground push the air column between them and the ground to stay in the air.”

No, that’s not true. The “air column between them and the ground” only has relevance at low altitude, when the helicopter is hovering in what is called its “ground effect.” In that case, yes, there’s a “cushion” of air built up from the rotor downwash that provides some additional lift.

But that’s only at very low altitudes. Once you’re above that, no, there’s no “air column between them and the ground,” and the helicopter stays in the air the same way fixed-wing aircraft stay in the air: from the airflow over the wings. The only difference is that in a helicopter, the wings are rotating.

Disclaimer: I’m only a helicopter flight test engineer, not an aerodynamicist. This has been simplified for your protection.

  46. MB Helicopters don’t lift because they push against the ground. Most people think this at some stage in their life until they hear Newtons Third Law of Motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

So by creating downwards force they are moving at the same force upwards. It doesn’t matter if you are next to land or not.

Duski’s explanation for why helicopters fall into the hole sounds convincing.

  53. MB - sorry - helicopters do NOT “compress the air between them and the ground” (unless flying in ground effect - which is like < 10 ft up) - they fly by LIFT - just like a regular airplane - a helicopter has a pair of LONG skinny WINGS called a rotor - and they spin and provide lift - which is why the technical term for a helicopter is a “rotary wing aircraft”

  62. “Helicopters hovering over the ground push the air column between them and the ground to stay in the air.” Wrong. Helicopters push air downwards, creating lift, whether there is ground beneath or not. The lift is generated at the blades, not by air bouncing off the ground and pushing the helicopter back up.

Think of a boat on a large lake, does the propeller push the water against the shore to create thrust? No. That is stilly. Same concept with helicopters.

  66. Helicopters do not sustain their altitude via the support of a “column” of air just as a bird doesn’t while flying and just as you dont support yourself with a “column” of water while treading water. The rotors are constantly pulling air from above them and pushing it below them, and as we all know that “every action has an equal and opposite reaction,” the “pulling down” of air “pushes up” on the helicopter. Therefore, what is happening beneath the helicopter with regard to air availability is irrelevant to the helicopter sustaining flight since the air the helicopter is using to maintain altitude is always above it.

“Helicopters hovering over the ground push the air column between them and the ground to stay in the air.”

What? The distance to the ground has no effect whatsoever on the mechanics of helicopter flight. The only element of any importance would be related to air pressure (altitude) and air movement (wind, jet streams, whatever).

  119. A lot of people are talking about a helicopter’s wings pushing down on the air and lifting the helicopter by reactive force. I am not qualified in aerodynamics, but I alwys thought that the lift off a plane’s wing (and the rotors of a helicopter) was from the negative pressure created *above* the wing, rather than pushing the air downwards. That said, I can see how flying across a large hole could cause a loss of lift. Warm air rising from the hole would be less dense than the surrounding air, and reduce the lift available to the rotors - a bit like the air bubbles in a jacuzzi mean you sink further into the water that you do in a swimming pool.

Great pics - thanks for putting it together.

When the Russians have finished digging they could use the empty hole as a giant barrel off a cannon to shoot satellites into space! But unfortunately they will probably fill it with the bodies of Chechnyans or” Enemies of the State” Such is life.

  141. Uf, a disclaimer of some sort. I didn’t say that a helicopter pushes air downwards and so creates a hovering efect. The physics here is rather complicated (some of you are corect with the diference in preasure) but, BEARDY PEARSON explained it great (quote: “A lot of people are talking about a helicopter’s wings pushing down on the air and lifting the helicopter by reactive force. I am not qualified in aerodynamics, but I alwys thought that the lift off a plane’s wing (and the rotors of a helicopter) was from the negative pressure created *above* the wing, rather than pushing the air downwards. Warm air rising from the hole would be less dense than the surrounding air, and reduce the lift available to the rotors - a bit like the air bubbles in a jacuzzi mean you sink further into the water that you do in a swimming pool.” end of quote) This is for the hot air. Considering the cold air, imagine that you are standing on a ~30cm broad board. There is not eaven a clue of wind. And sudently, there comes a strong wind. Normaly, such a broad board is enough for standing, bud so sudent blow of air knock’s you down, if you are not prepared.
If there is a physicist, please help with a explanation. I am to interested in details.

The sheer vastness and incredible size of the holes is quite awe-inspiring. Such an enormous natural feature belittles so much that man has created, and makes he himself feel small and insignificant - it makes one think very deeply (ha ha, deeply, get it? It’s a pun on holes coz they’re - y’know - deep, lol =)

  175. I’ve been to the Binham Mine, impressive. At the time they told me that you could stack two Empire State Buildings on top of each other and the TV mast of the top one would just peek out over the rim. The haul trucks used to pull the ore out have a capacity of 180-200,000 tons. A typical highway tractor-trailer has a weight limit of 40 tons, of which roughly 15 tons are the truck itself. So these things pull as much as 8 tractor-trailers. The tires are 12 feet in diameter. In the early 1990’s (when I was there) a haul truck took 2 hours to reach the bottom of the pit. So, a haul truck driver’s day was: drive to the bottom, get a load of ore, drive to the top, dump the load, eat lunch, make one more round trip, punch out and go home.
The mine yields primarily copper, but some of the “impurities” are gold, silver and platinum. The mine & the adjacent smelter pay their overhead selling these “impurities” and the sale of the copper becomes pure profit.

The jet of water seen in the photo is from the hydroelectric generator. We used to skateboard in the horizontal portion of the pipe, as it is rare that water is acutally spilling through. Putah creek is also a premier fly-fishing stream. Great to see a home-town landmark in the collection.

  218. I agree with the aeronautics engineer/copter pilot about the lift principles of ahelicpter.
He DID say the the so-called “column of air” exists at very low altitudes and would afford some cushion lift. This implies that the rotors could rotate at lower speeds.
In that state, a sudden drop of the ground could cause the copters to fall accordingly, and recovery of altitude would not be easy since the rotors “wind up” slowly.
Aside from the technical aspect, the loss of copters over a mammoth hole needs more explanation.

What kind of approach did they make? What speed? - Did they hover attempt hovering too soon?
And ultimately, what skill level did the pilots have?
There are other questions, but recovery of the copters could explain some of them.
There will always be a pilot who will try this stunt. Maybe a survivor can explain the mystery.

It’s a great website and I enjoyed the images greatly -and Yes, there IS a picture of a Black Hole.(Refer to April 2008 issue of Smithsonian magazine.)
