bollocks

apparently the server couldn’t handle close to 100,000 hits per day on deputy-dog.com so they suspended my account.

it’s beyond frustrating. i was finally getting somewhere with the site, the hits were coming thick and fast, close to a million in the space of 2 months, my posts were being linked on the sites i used to read religiously, it was fucking great.

and then technology shafted me again.

i apparently need a dedicated server for this little blog. it’s insane. i can’t afford a fucking dedicated server to run a site i don’t make money on. i tried ads but made about $20 in a month, and i don’t blame people for not clicking on ‘em, i wouldn’t either.

it’s a no-win situation.

anyone got any ideas? how the fuck do you make money on a site like this? not to get rich, just enough to pay for a dedicated server.

regarding the site, i’ve imported the last batch of posts from the old site but there will be some video embeds that don’t work due to the code being different and duplicated posts. i’m working my way through it all slowly so bear with me.

  1. Dude, I feel your pain. Your site is taking off like mad, and these stupor-computers can’t keep up. What a crock! As for making money off the site– my guess is that you’re up the proverbial stream without a means of locomotion. But what do I know? I’m just another poor blogger myself! You’d make more money having a yard sale, you know?

unless you’re selling porn on the internet i really don’t understand how you’re meant to just break even.
    fuck it though.
the wordpress servers can take the brunt. as long as the site doesn’t fucking crash again i’m happy.

  4. DD, why not ask people in the same sort of situation? Rob over at A Welsh View must have had the same problem and he’s going strong.

  9. thanks for all the advice and emails people, i’m gonna have to bite the bullet i think and cough up for a dedicated server. it’ll be staying where it is for the meantime though while i sell a couple of organs.

ilyushkin, my last provider was reliablesite.net and i have to say they were more than fair with me, i smashed all my monthly limits and they still kept my site up for a while. i’d absolutely recommend them if they fit your needs.

  10. Did you try Google Adsense? It works quite well… I love your blog, the content is original and not the same stuff you see everywhere, plus you seem to put a lot of effort in your posts. It has quickly become one of my favorite sites to check daily :)

  11. Mate, it’s a bit of a slog but there are a few tricks or tweaks you need to do with Adsense to make a few bucks a day (comme moi). Briefly they are - 1/choose text ads only 2/ forget banners - go for a skyscraper and the largest block ad. 3/ put the skyscraper on the right so that as people scroll down they come across your ads 4/ bury the block ads in your copy with this HTML - PUT THE GOOGLE CODE HERE (don’t mess with it) 5/ make sure your links are the same colour as your Google Adsense headings - I use the standard blue 0000FF) 6/ Put some decent keywords in bold so the Google spider knows to put relevant ads with it 7/ use a few good non-ad links in your copy so people get used to clicking on them 8/ track your results with the “Add new channel” in the Adsense set-up. 9/ if you find Adsense are giving you crappy links that only pay a cent or two - put those URLs in your “Blocked Advertisers” list (whatever they call it, “filter” maybe) .

People make money on Adwords and Adsense by bidding low (a few cents) for keywords, making their Adwords ads and then when someone clicks on the ad it takes them to the advertisers site where hopefully they will click on more Adsense ads that pay more that what the Adwords ads have cost - “Arbitrage” its called.

    Have a look at this - http://www.welcometowallyworld.com/optimizing-adsense/2007/8/16/finding-profitable-keyphrases-for-adsense.html

BTW you can also find Wordpress Plugins for Adsense here - http://www.welcometowallyworld.com/optimizing-adsense/2007/8/29/wordpress-plug-ins-to-make-money-with-adsense.html

I find you need to keep testing and tweaking Adsense. Some days you might only make a buck or two - others you might crack $20. I was stoked this morning to have two hits worth $1.50 each. Of course you can never know for sure which particluar ads pay but you can get a pretty good idea of what’s working for you. BTW never click on your own ads or get friends and family to do it - Google is right on to that click fraud. Hope this helps. Let me know how you get on. à bientôt, Malkie, Paris.

  12. Send me an email. We have a dedicated server we were going to delete. I can give you the specs and see if you want to take over the account. David
