the next area to investigate had to be police stations.
there isn’t a huge amount of info available out there but here’s what i could get my hands on. i’ll also be adding to the list as and when i find more interestingness.
police & fire station, berlin, germany
this little beauty was designed in 2002 by sauerbruch hutton architects and won the riba award in 2004. the station houses police cars, fire engines, control equipment and administrative offices and looks fucking incredible.
the red and green slats on the station’s exterior represent the emergency services within the building: green for the police, red for the fire brigade.
pasabaglari police station, cappadocia, turkey
the building above is one of many strange rock formations in cappadocia, turkey and it just so happens that this one is used as a police station. i’m unsure as to whether there are any cells inside and i’m guessing there isn’t a garage for the police cars.
new orleans police station, new orleans, usa
i don’t know much about this police station but i do know it’s the most inviting i’ve ever seen. it would definitely cheer me up following arrest to be questioned in a building that looks like a house from home alone. rumour has it the officers offer hot showers, massages, roast dinners and satsumas to all who enter, guilty or not, and the cell bars are made of sausages (you know the nice ones full of herbs?).
i’d fucking love to live in that police station.
shipra path police station, jaipur, india
between october 26th and november 4th 2006, while the rest of us were blissfully unaware of the huge operation taking place, ‘police station visitors week’ was underway. this consisted of 2000 ‘experts’ in 23 different countries visiting every local police station they could find in order to rate it.
the objective: to locate the best police station in the world.
the winner: shipra path station, jaipur, india
criteria used included community orientation, physical condition, treatment of the public, transparency and accountability, and detention conditions.
you can read a pdf of the findings here.
carrabelle police station, carrabelle, florida
honestly, this is a police station. it used to be just a phone with no box but then the officer on duty kept getting rained on, so they built this ‘mini-station’ and the rest is history. the guy in the photo is carrabelle police chief jesse smith and he’s worked for this bustling 3-man station for over 22 years.
the phone number? 3691
hamilton police station, hamilton, bermuda
it may look unassuming from the outside but this station is ‘the worst in the world’ according to inspectors 2 years ago following numerous condemning reports.
the team claimed that hamilton police station contains so many hazards that officers and members of the public are at constant risk of serious injury.
the station was intended to be a temporary home for officers way back in 1978 but since then they’ve not been given a permanent building.
hong kong police headquarters, hong kong
the hong kong police hq is said to be the tallest police station in the world at 42 storeys and this state-of-the-art monster cost nearly us$390 million to construct.

Grasses
A range of grasses are available from Floraselect. Grass served as great ground cover and works well in mixed borders too.
