top 10 physical transformations for film

i caught the end of american history x last night and it made me realise again just how fucking scary ed norton became for the role. the guy looked like a different person.

in honour of said acting masterclass i present the top 10 physical transformations for a film role…..

10. Sylvester Stallone - Cop Land

stallone

stallone shocked everyone by actually attempting to act in cop land, and while that may have failed he did manage to do one impressive thing - lose some muscle and gain some fat. he had to put on 40lbs/2.8 stone (that’s roughly the weight of one of his nipples on a cold day).

9. Renee Zellwegger - Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason

renee

renee gained 28lbs/2 stone for the film, mastered the english accent and went to advanced pouting classes. it also seems that her hair became hay-like and her breasts quadrupled in size.

8. Eric Bana - Chopper

now that’s what i call a transformation - i honestly wouldn’t have known it was the same person. bana gained 30lbs/2.1 stone, spent 4 hours per day on set having shit tattoos applied to his body and even spent a few days with the real chopper in the name of research.

legend.

7. Jared Leto - Chapter 27

leto

i actually think he looks better when he’s rotund.

he gained a ginormous 62lbs/4.4 stone as preparation for the film chapter 27 (that’s probably the first and last time you’ll hear of that movie) and said he did it by eating pizza every single day, a result of which was daily vomit burps.

6. Matt Damon - Courage Under Fire

this one really gives me the creeps. how fucking ill does he look on the right?

he had to lose 40lbs/2.8 stone for the film and damaged his health so much that he needed medical supervision for months afterwards.

holy shit. a bit too far?

5. Ed Norton - American History xX

norton

possibly the scariest transformation to date, norton gained 30lbs/2.1 stone prior to filming american history x and went to the gym a lot. additionally he taught himself how to grimace like a nazi, applied a fake swastika to his chest and shaved his head.

the result?

one of the most powerful performances ever in one of the darkest films since bmx bandits.

4. Charlize Theron - Monster

monster
(left to right, aileen wuornos - charlize as aileen - charlize as herself)

in order to play extremely unattractive serial killer aileen wuornos in the film monster ms theron gained 30lbs/2.1 stone, wore prosthetic teeth and generally acted like a really angry slob.

and it worked. she won an oscar and managed to look hideous.

3. Hilary Swank - Boys Don’t Cry

this is hilary swank….

swankg

this is also hilary swank…

swankb

confused? me too. she prepared for the film by living as a bloke for a month - her breasts were bound with tape to hide her curves and she wore socks down the front of her trousers to accentuate her non-penis. her neighbours apparently thought her brother had been visting for the past few weeks.

on top of that, it’s a fucking brilliant performance. if you aint seen it i suggest you do, just not during a first date.

boys don’t cry trailer…

2. Robert De Niro - Raging Bull

when it comes to method acting you can’t beat de niro. for cape fear he had a dentist crack his teeth to make his character look more believable, prior to taxi driver he worked 12 hour shifts in a new york cab to get into the role, he learned to play the saxophone before starting filming on new york, new york…. it goes on and on.

but the reason for his inclusion in this list is the fucking awesome weight gain during raging bull. forget gaining weight in between projects, bobby put on a massive 60lbs/4.2 stone whilst filming in order to play an ageing jake la motta, and this was after training like a madman in order to play the younger boxer.

the best of raging bull:

1. Christian Bale - Machinist/Batman Begins

holy shit, this guy’s committed to the point of insanity. a clear winner.

in 2004 (apparently in only a few months) he lost a whopping 63lbs/4.5 stone for his role as an insomniac in the machinist. his co-stars have since claimed that he was even eager to lose more weight during filming and had to be stopped by the director.

as if that wasn’t enough he then immediately had to stuff his face in order to play Batman. he gained, in the space of 6 months, a ridiculous 100lbs/7 stone! how in shit’s name do you do that? over a stone a month?! must’ve been tricky finding time to get down the gym in between shoving chicken down his gullet and sitting on the toilet.

  9. one that was absolutely forgotten… Billy Bob Thorton in “Slingblade”. Another one that you might have never seen, but was equally astonishing was Marty Sader in a film called “Most High”. And last, but certainly not least, Tom Hanks in “Castaway”. All three of those roles make you wonder who that person is for a little while until you realise you’ve been looking at someone you know already for the last half hour.

And as far as Bale is concerned, he’s done it twice now… not only “The Machinist”, but also “Rescue Dawn”.

  13. Yup , I second your thought Belvedere. And I think its how convencing and dedicated the acting comes across too.

To include De Niro is a given seeing that before his rebirth as a b-list crap movie “contender”, he set the bar high with method actors and with a natualism and imersion in a role.
Because he’s included then we shouldn’t forget Lon Chaney.

not long ago , I went through a “tuna diet” like that which C.Bale did for “The Machinist”.
You loose a pound a day and drink so much water and never have a bowel movement and in the process I quit smoking.

  15. Watch the movie Requiem for a Dream. The Mom (Sarah Goldfarb) I think her name is Helen Bustaire is a chubby and curly haired woman at the beginning of filming. By the end of the movie (reportedly took five weeks to film) she is basically a wrinkly skeleton. Weighing in at a whopping 103 lbs. Definition of movie makeover. She lost over 53 lbs. DURING the filming. Dedication.

  37. Actually the Matt Damon mention isn’t even remotely a transformation.

    Look:
    # The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) …. Jason Bourne
    # Courage Under Fire (1996) …. Specialist Ilario
From 1996 to 2007 is roughly what, 11 years? Anyone can go from String Bean to Effing Ripped in 11 years.

    Keep in mind that:
    # Good Will Hunting (1997) …. Will Hunting
Good WIll Hunting was done in 1997. That wasn’t even that radical a transformation, and he looks amazing in that movie, less than a year later.

So if he looks Ill and 1996 and in 1997 he looks normal and healthy again, sure he might have needed medical attention in 1996, but he’s healthy and quite normal in 1997.

Y’all need to get your astonishment in perspective here.

Let’s take one long hard look at Elijah Wood and his absolutely amazing transformation into Frodo. Not only did he have to take nogenfogger elixers multiple times a day until he finally got the shrink effect to shoot the movie but he also had to grow larger feet and hairy ones at that! Then he put his own life at risk by carrying around this ring that was ultimately putting his life in danger. Talk about dedication. You guys are all chimps for thinking those were great feats. Frodo pwns all.

It wasn’t pointless. The insomnia and weight loss was due to emotional stress the character was under. The reason for the stress becomes clear at the end of the film.

OF COURSE not every single great physical transformation by an actor is here - hence the Top 10, rather than Top Infinity - so while some of you brought up excellent examples (Vincent D’Onofrio in multiple roles was a standout), this is still DD’s list. it is inevitably a work-in-progress - next year, he’s gonna have to weigh in Emile Hirsch for dropping 41 lbs for “Into the Wild.” the enthusiasm is awesome, but the petty attacks are pathetic. take it down a notch.

I loved “Batman Begins”, loved “American Psycho”, and I loved “The Prestige”. But seriously, fuck Christian Bale. What Bale did in “The Machinist” pissed me off. That kind of “dedication” to weight loss is what kills other people for various reasons. My God, what pretentious actor crap that is.

From 1996 to 2007 is roughly what, 11 years? Anyone can go from String Bean to Effing Ripped in 11 years.

I can’t tell if you’re trying to be funny or not. Matt Damon lost 40 pounds DURING SHOOTING. He goes from being chubby at the beginning to being emaciated at the end. The Bourne Ultimatum doesn’t enter in to it. The choice of pictures, above, was a poor one.

Look at him in “G.I.Jane”, then in “a walk on the moon”, in “Eastern Promises”, in “Daylight”, in “LotR”, then in “28 Days”, in and least in “History of violence”. It’s amazing, how this guy can change! And he really prepares! He reads lots of books, travels to important places, talks to people who can tell him something e.g.: he spent about three weeks in Russia talking to mafia bosses to prepare for “Eastern Promises” - while nobody, not even his family, knew where he was. Which led to the situation that people thought he was a real mafioso when entering a russian pub after a hard shooting day. xD When he played a dumb man, he didn’t speak for the whole shooting time! He broke a tooth and a toe while shooting LotR, and he nearly died when jumping down a cliff. … I could go on for hours…^^

    ***SPOILER ALERT***
If you don’t want the ending of “The Prestige” ruined for you, please skip my comment…

    Consider these facts:
    A) Christian Bale is getting lauded for alternating between ripped and skinny.
    B) In The Prestige he plays identical twins that pretend to be the same person.
    C) He says he thought he could nail the Prestige character because of “the fact that this relies upon secrecy not only for his livelihood, but his for his very life and the fact that he was somebody who saw this as being so vital and such value for his life and pretty much the only thing he’s valued for by anybody.” (see http://www.darkhorizons.com/news06/prestige1.php )

I think the conclusion is clear:
Christian Bale isn’t gaining and losing weight every movie. He’s really two people - one skinny, one ripped - who are alternating their acting roles.

Regardless of how one may feel about what Mr. Bale did to himself for “The Machinist,” the effect definitely enhanced the overall impact of finally discovering who the character was prior to the onset of the insomnia. And I’d take exception with anyone who dismisses it as “pretentious actor crap.” Bale may to go extremes for his roles, but it’s no more offensive than an extreme sports athlete risking their life for a stupid trophy or medal. And if Bale were just another pretentious actor out for accolades and recognition, he’d actually be on talk shows promoting himself. He’d be just another Tom Cruise-esque media whore. I suspect he does what he does for entirely his own reasons.

  131. I know that this is all subjective… but…

No Top 10 list of physical transformations is worth the value of the paper (or website) it is printed on without:

    Tom Hanks for “Cast Away”
    Adrien Brody for “The Pianist”
Vincent D’Onofrio for “Full Metal Jacket”

Sly doesn’t belong on the above list. He doesn’t look like a different person than normal in the movie. It’s not as if his 40 pounds were really that noticeable anyway.

I’m on the fence about Hilary Swank. She did an amazing job in “Boys Don’t Cry”, but ultimately it was just a haircut and some good makeup.

The 3 I mentioned above, Hanks, Brody, & D’Onofrio, went through incredible changes in a short time just so they’d “look the part” in their movies. While their faces didn’t change all that much (you could still tell it was them), you really felt for their characters. I was worried Hanks & Brody were going to waste away to nothing if the director’s wanted to add even another 15 minutes to the films…

  132. I know it is a small movie and it has a lot more to do with makeup than losing-gaining weight; I mean it´s more a characterization than an actual physical transformation, but Gary Oldman in Nobody´s Baby is absolutely amazing. Then again, he ALWAYS is.

It´s vey strange to see terms like “lazy actor” and “pretentious actor crap” being used to describe two fairly gifted performers, such as Edward Norton and Christian Bale; but I suppose acting is very subjective, and everybody is entitled to his-her own opinion and taste, so; personally I think they both are a lot more interesting to watch than, say, Tom Hanks and most of his movies, but maybe it’s only me.

    - Charlize Theron may have been wearing makeup to make that transformation in Monster, but it didn’t stop you from hating that pathetic creature she portrayed
    - Donnie Walberg is unrecognizable in “The Sixth Sense”, but went to being a respectable, likable character in “Band of Brothers”, or the short run TV show “Boomtown”… Far cry from the bad boy in the NKotB
    - Gary Oldman is one of the most impressive actors for making complete transformations, a strange, cartoon-like character in the fifth element, a rasta drug dealer in “True Romance”, to a US senator in “the Contender”… ok, so those three aren’t so far apart…

I think this shows that he is a brilliant, and determined actor, who will do anything for his movies roles. And he has done really well by getting the weight of so quickly, he looks really hot.
