addictive vs addicting

just a small gripe that seems to be smacking me in the face more and more with every fucking day.

why do people use the word ‘addicting’ when it should obviously be ‘addictive’?

am i missing something? has there been an official english language announcement while i’ve been busy?

tell me before i vomit.

  2. the difference is, ‘addicting’ shouldn’t be used when describing something you can’t get enough of. there’s already a word for it - addictive.
just seems widely accepted recently that ‘addicting’ is in fact acceptable.
we need to stamp it out.

  3. Thank you! I am so sick and tired of hearing that too! Now someone tell all of these celebrities that say it constantly!

  4. This drives me insane also. It’s bad enough hearing people say it on the street. But it takes the biscuit when a popular website such as addictinggames.com uses it as the web address. I found out that addictinggames.com is also an MTV company. I’m sending them a message to bring attention to this flagrant disregard of grammar. I suggest everyone join me.

  5. Here’s an article that may help you understand as to why some used “addicting.” And FYI, the English language changes every four years, so yes, there can be an official english language announcement while you’ve been busy. It’s happened to almost everyone four years ago when the Supreme Court made a ruling on the use of a comma in series, and yet people are still omitting that last comma in series of single entities.
